The Mindset List for the Class of 2015

I ran across this video recently online. It's part of an interview with Tom McBride (Beloit College) where he discusses this year's mindset list created for the Class of 2015. He created the (witty) list back in 1998 to help faculty at the college "watch their references" with incoming freshman. The list includes 75 references of the Class of 2015. I'll include 15 of them here and you can go [here] for the rest. Lists like this could prove very helpful to youth workers or church leaders (in general) in knowing the audience they are speaking to.

  1. There has always been an Internet ramp onto the information highway.
  2. Ferris Bueller and Sloane Peterson could be their parents.
  3. States and Velcro parents have always been requiring that they wear their bike helmets.
  4. The only significant labor disputes in their lifetimes have been in major league sports.
  5. There have nearly always been at least two women on the Supreme Court, and women have always commanded U.S. Navy ships.
  6. They “swipe” cards, not merchandise.
  7. As they’ve grown up on websites and cell phones, adult experts have constantly fretted about their alleged deficits of empathy and concentration.
  8. Their school’s “blackboards” have always been getting smarter.
  9. “Don’t touch that dial!”….what dial?
  10. American tax forms have always been available in Spanish.
  11. More Americans have always traveled to Latin America than to Europe.
  12. Amazon has never been just a river in South America.
  13. Refer to LBJ, and they might assume you're talking about LeBron James.
  14. All their lives, Whitney Houston has always been declaring “I Will Always Love You.”
  15. O.J. Simpson has always been looking for the killers of Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman.

I also found the website for the mindset lists, which gets over a million hits per year. It was interesting to read up on the class I graduated with (2002).

President Obama Loses His Presidential Seal

President Obama lost his presidential seal last night when he was speaking before an audience of women. As you'll see in the video, he didn't take it too seriously and even joked "they are sweating bullets in the back right now." Crazy things have happened when I've spoken too... power outages... people having seizures...props falling... but I can't say that we've ever seen something like this happen during a presidential address.

Oh wait, there was that flying shoe incident during Bush's speech a couple years ago!

So what crazy things have happened when you've been at the mic or podium?

Red Skelton on The Pledge of Allegiance

I watched this video recently of Red Skelton reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. This great communicator speaks to the meaning behind the words in the pledge. Even though this piece was filmed in the 60's, its timely for our nation today. How often have you heard the pledge or even recited it and blown right past the very meaning behind the words?

Thanks Red! May we remember this every time we hear or recite those words or see the Red, White and Blue.

Andy Stanley on Communication

Ed Stetzer spent some time interviewing Andy Stanley about communication. Andy is hailed as one of the best communicators in the world and when you hear him speak you'd have to agree. His talks are compelling and one of my favorite things about him is that he always gives great application for the takeaway. His book "Communicating for a Change" is one of my favorites and has been most helpful in grooming myself as a speaker. In the five-part series on his blog Stetzer asked Stanley "if you could only give one word to young pastors about communicating what would it be?" Here is what he had to say:

"Show up every Sunday morning with a burden that is so heavy that you feel like you will die if you don't deliver it. And pray for that. Because if you don't have that, then you just have information. The people will put up with all kinds of a lack of excellence if there is an intensity and a burden that has to be delivered. And many times I have looked at my notes and thought, "Yeah, this might be helpful, but God, what's the thing I can't wait until Sunday morning to deliver? And I honestly can't wait for Sunday morning.

The other thing I always tell pastors, "If you preach from your weaknesses, you will never run out of sermon material."

For the entire series, check out part one, two, three, four and five here. Good stuff!

In a world where Don LaFontaine doesn't exist...

You know the voice-over guy from all the movies, tv shows and pretty much everything else you've ever seen -- well, besides the projects that Ryan Seacrest hasn't touched? He passed away today at the age of 68. What in the world are we going to do now?

Sad.
