Crowder-Sourcing for Christmas

I heard some buzz about this weeks ago, but I just viewed the video on YouTube. At the National Youth Worker's Convention this year (Youth Specialties) Mark Matlock asked the crowd (thousands of Youth Workers) to pull out their cell phones and record the David Crowder band. The end result... a nicely done, crowd-sourced Christmas video. Merry Christmas!

2,500 Member Virtual Choir

Eric Whitacre had a brilliant idea after receiving an email from a student who sent him a video of herself performing one of his signature songs. What if he put out a request for others to do this? And what if he could create a virtual choir made up of 100 people from around the nation singing the same song from the comfort of their own homes?

What happened next was amazing. Over
2,500 people responded to his request ... from over 58 countries! I give you Eric Whitacre's VIRTUAL CHOIR performing "Sleep."

Stay Classy [ #SYMC Music Video]

Each year Jake Rutenbar creates a music video for the conference. This year he raised the bar. Check out this year's installment titled "Stay Classy." This is one of the slickest videos I think I've ever seen at a conference and its definitely worth 4.5 minutes of your time.

#SYMC - Gungor Music

Gungor is joining for the Simply Youth Ministry Conference here in Chicago. Last night we were led in worship by the band. I've seen Gungor many times before but Michael has reinvented himself a bit... and this new worship expression embraces art, liturgy and rock (or post-rock). It's refreshing.

So what are your thoughts?

Foo Fighters - Come Alive! [Video]

I really like this. Rich Oster took the Foo Fighters track "Come Alive" and made a video using Keynote and Snapz. I appreciate the time invested in things like this. This makes a great little worship piece. I plan to use it in one of our upcoming worship experiences.

David Crowder's Latest Music [Video]

I love David Crowder's music. He'll also go down in my books as one of the friendliest people I've ever worked with. Now, he's adding to his credit "Lite Brite genius." Remember the old school "Lite Brites?" Crowder and over 80 of his friends spent time shooting over 1200 frames on this 80's toy to make a one-of-a-kind music video for his latest release "Shine." The video and song are both very impressive. Go [here] if you want further details about how the video was made.

A Band I'd Recommend...

We've produced a concert with a local band, Bear Crossing, twice this year. Our first experience with them was in January when we relaunched our ministry. Our last experience was just a few weeks ago when we hosted a concert to benefit our youth mission trip this summer. I asked Bear Crossing to help us raise the funds we needed and even though they had gigs on their schedule that gave them greater exposure, they jumped on board immediately.
These guys have a great sound, are fun to work with and will do a great job for you. If you are looking for a band for your next event, give them a call. Tell them I referred you. =)
We still need to make up some ground for our students to be able to go on mission this summer. Would you consider donating to this cause? [Click here] to give and make sure you indicate the donation is for "youth mission trip."

Michael Jackson Remix

Saw this amazing remix of Michael Jackson songs on the internet yesterday and was blown away by the talent. This remix is so good even MJ would be proud.
Editor's note: This Michael Jackson medley has the web raving, and wondering if they're seeing double. [Featuring Sam Tsui, with music and direction by Kurt Hugo Schneider]

Risk.

On Monday I traveled to scope out a potential venue for our fall retreat and was listening to a radio station that was new for me. Pretty soon I heard this radio announcer state that she had hijacked the control room and put herself on the air in hopes that the station would give her a position. I was immediately skeptical thinking that this was some sort of a publicity stunt and decided to call in. I got the announcer [Kendall] on the phone and told her that she was doing a great job but there was no way she was an amateur.

She quickly explained that she had worked in radio in Dallas and accidentally swore on the air one day and was let go. She moved to the Virginia Beach area and decided to apply to this radio station but was quickly denied because management felt she may be a liability.

Soon after she visited the station [which happened to be this past Monday] to plead with the management to give her a shot and found the radio station empty. She decided to take a risk (and a big one I might add), lock herself in the control room and put herself on the air!

Pretty soon she won over a couple of the staff who actually kept her from being arrested (and kept the police from using excessive force to break in) and 29 hours later (after she also won over the listeners -- who jammed the phone lines) she got the position she so desperately wanted.

As of today, Kendall Taylor now runs the afternoon drive show (3-7 PM) and was glad she took a HUGE risk. By the way, I called to congratulate her after she made the announcement about the good news (while she was sobbing on-air) around 7:15pm last evening.

Stories like this make me go "what in the world am I doing to take a RISK?"

    Free Honey for the Ears

One of my favorite things about working in radio years ago was all the fringe benefits - like getting free music. Occasionally I still get free music but I can't reveal my sources. :=)

A kind provider just gave me 10 Jami Smith CDs to giveaway to you, my dear readers. If you would like a copy of Jami Smith's album "Bravo God" just leave a comment with your full name and your current location or territory where you live. I'll select 10 winners (at random) on this Tuesday, July 14, 2009.

  • There will be only 10 winners chosen, at random.

    American Idol: Final Thoughts

I just finished watching the last round of American Idol, season 8. Last week GOKEY went home. Gokey was my pick to win from the beginning, so needless to say I was a little disappointed when he didn't make it through. I must say that these two finalists, Kris Allen and Adam Lambert have done extremely well this season. Adam is clearly a well-seasoned performer and Kris has been improving a little more each and every time he has performed and the grassroots effort (by his fans) to help him earn the title of American Idol is unprecedented.

I actually spent about 30 minutes on a Kris Allen fan site last week after the show went off-air and was nervous because I could hear the fan train literally pushing Allen ahead of Gokey. Then I noticed that only Lambert and Allen were mentioned on Twitter trends and I knew that Danny would be packing his bags.

I honestly don't know who will take this. I think its anybody's game. Adam has got an incredible vocal range but every song is starting to sound the same to me. Kris, on the other hand, has pulled a few performances (like last week's rendition of Kanye West's song Heartless) that has blown me away but his fate is totally in the hands of Danny Gokey's fans.

I have been ready to predict Adam Lambert as the winner here after Gokey left the show but I can see Danny Gokey's fans voting for Kris Allen over Adam Lambert. Ok... I'm signing off so I can cast my vote. Who will be the next American Idol? We'll find out tomorrow night. Drop me some comments and let me know your thoughts.
