Recently I was interviewed by YouthMin.org about working with teenagers and also about my Coaching Network (that you can be a part of by simply applying [here] -- today is the deadline!) I'll include a couple of questions here that I was asked and then you can go [here] for the rest.[YM] What led you to create the Coaching Network? [Terrace] I feel like God has been nudging me to Coach youth workers for a few years now but I never did it. I've seen a great need in the world of youth ministry for people who are just starting out to have someone to help guide them in building youth ministries from scratch. Over the course of the last year a couple of close friends asked me why in the world I wasn't coaching. EJ Swanson is one of those people who talked with me about this. After our last talk I spent 3 weeks of focused prayer about it and knew that I should follow-through. So early last year I founded the Youth Worker Coaching Network designed for youth workers who have been in the field for 5 years or less.
[YM] What's something about the Coaching Network that you have enjoyed the most?
[Terrace] Being 17+ years deep in youth ministry, you forget about what things were like in your first few years. It's been wonderful to be able to help rookie youth workers walk through the challenges of just starting out and to help dream with them and inspire them in their journey.

One of the things that makes great leaders is knowing what your resources are and knowing how to use them. I think that many leaders just don't know what is available to them so they encounter obstacles (more often than not) in their journey when they could have made things easier for them just by knowing the right people, having the right tools, and knowing how to use those tools.

Coaching Network Learns from Greg Stier

One of the special elements I've intentionally programmed into my Coaching Network is some online meetings where I bring together all the participants to meet with me. For a few of these I'm inviting some special guests to join us. Last week I was stoked to have my friend Greg Stier share with us about reaching teens who don't know Christ and ministry to local school campuses. It was awesome! I just love Greg's passion and so appreciated his time with us.Pictured above you see a few of the guys I'm currently coaching that logged on to the webinar. We also had a few people listening in by phone. Gotta love technology!

Behind the Scenes of the Coaching Network

There's been a bit of buzz around the net in the last few weeks about my new Coaching Network I'm launching in August. I couldn't be more thrilled to invest as much of my time as possible into youth workers who need a coach. (By the way, tomorrow is the deadline to apply!)
I've come up with plan to invest 6 months of my time into personally investing into youth workers who have been in the field 5 years or less. Behind the scenes of this blog I have been talking with veteran youth workers who want to be a part of that experience too. They will be pouring into the participants as well. I'm also excited to have corporate sponsors, like my friends at Simply Youth Ministry, on board to help deliver some great resources and offer encouragement to those wanting to learn.
I was chatting with a pastor friend the other day about some of the things that seminary doesn't really prepare you for in ministry. I talk with youth workers each week who are fresh out of academia and struggle with some of the things they deal with while working for churches. Part of my role as a coach and cheerleader during the 6-month stint will be helping youth workers process through the demands of ministry and help deliver some care and insight to areas where they might need it most.

Why did you go into youth ministry?
Ultimately, I went into youth ministry because I felt God’s call to it. I was very involved in my youth group (as a teen) and my youth pastor gave me leadership opportunities. I felt God’s call to full-time service during my time there.

I ended up mentoring this teen and months later hearing him talk about how I helped change his life left a lasting impression on my mind and heart for eternity.

Michael Bayne and I have been friends for a long time. Back in the glory days Mike & I were doing youth ministry in the same city and he was a part of a youth pastor network I led. I have always felt Mike was such a great thought-leader. He's doing amazing things in TN now... but we keep in touch and he's excited to be an encouragement to participants of the coaching network. He recently shared about it on his blog, which you need to read.
Mark Cox is a blogger at ThinkNextNow.com. I've been so impressed with Mark in the short time I've known him. Not only does he really love youth ministry but I can tell through his blog and the conversations that he and I have had over the last couple years that he's constantly looking to grow as a thought-leader. I had written out a number of details about what the program would look like and here's what I initially put on paper: I know people want more than a monthly phone call... they like having the one-on-one (life on life) coaching... and they probably don't have a lot of money.
Since those first few thoughts written on a white napkin, I've built some structure to my network and have had my first corporate sponsor sign on to show their support! I'm truly stoked about this... and can't wait to begin.

Each week I connect with a number of youth workers from all across the country. I absolutely enjoy being able to encourage and equip youth pastors in the trenches. But every week I get emails, DMs on twitter, and phone calls from youth workers who want some help. There seems to be a need for more coaches and mentors.For a long while now I have felt strongly that I should take the coaching and mentoring I've done to another level. I certainly don't mind giving advice... but I thought, why not spend more time pouring into a group of individuals who truly want (and need) guidance?
So weeks ago I sat down and mapped out a plan for a coaching network. There certainly seems to be a need for coaches... and even though I've made Youth Ministry my profession for more than 15 years now, I still appreciate someone who has been in the game longer than I have pouring into me.
So I put pen to paper and wrote out a number of details about what my coaching program would look like. Here's what I wrote down initially: I know people want more than a monthly phone call... they like having the one-on-one (life on life) coaching... and they probably don't have a lot of money.
I love conferences. I'm actually a conference-junkie. I'd probably attend everyone of them that I could if I could only afford it. Most of the time conferences leave me wanting more though. There's not enough practical ideas given... and I'd sure love to sit down with the guy who inspired me (from the stage) and pick his brain a little.
My coaching network would offer everything you might get from a conference... but it would be a semester long. You would get 6 months of personal coaching... weekly phone calls (check-ins), free resources, and there would some interaction with other youth workers in the field. All of this (that I mentioned, and more) at an affordable rate... probably the cost of a conference.
I'm only proposing something here. If there was a need for it, I'd spend a few more months building the structure... and probably launch officially in September.
