Jefferson Bethke on Student Ministry

I got to meet Jefferson Bethke at the Simply Youth Ministry Conference in early March. You may know him as the "I hate religion but love Jesus" guy. This spoken word video has had over 20 million views on YouTube. 12 million of those views were within the first 4 days after the video was posted on the internet!

Recently Jefferson was interviewed by Trevin Wax from The Gospel Project on his thoughts on Student Ministry. I really enjoyed listening to his insights on what is most relevant in youth ministry today, what needs to change, and the Gospel. This is definitely worth your time.

This is What Has Made Me Pretty Famous

I was giving some thought about an upcoming talk I'm preparing to give to students on the subject of Heaven and then I viewed this video online where a guy sings about how he's "looking for a city." This may inspire you like it did me. Ha!

My favorite line: "This is what has made me pretty famous." I've been walking around the office all morning quoting that one line over and over again after I do just about anything.

Crowder-Sourcing for Christmas

I heard some buzz about this weeks ago, but I just viewed the video on YouTube. At the National Youth Worker's Convention this year (Youth Specialties) Mark Matlock asked the crowd (thousands of Youth Workers) to pull out their cell phones and record the David Crowder band. The end result... a nicely done, crowd-sourced Christmas video. Merry Christmas!

Black Friday Prank [Video]

I watched this video recently and just had to share with you. Two guys go into Target and attempt to buy an insane list of nonsensical items. This is milk-through-the-nose funny!

Bethlehemian Rhapsody [Video]

Saw this over on Marko's blog. While I haven't watched that many Christmas videos so far this season, I'd be willing to bet this one will be my favorite (hands down!) this Christmas.

Watch... enjoy... and share.

$5,000 Giveaway This Christmas

Can you use $5,000 this Christmas? Watch the video... and read on.

My friend,
Tim Schmoyer, is doing something really cool this Christmas. He's written a brand-new ebook on how to walk you and your team of leaders through a 30-step process to discovering what God's vision is for your unique ministry context and he's planning to give a portion of the proceeds (up to $5,000!) from the profit of the book to a youth worker this Christmas!

All you have to do to enter is
submit a quick video and tell your story about how you could use the money by December 9, 2011. I would love to submit my own video (I mean, we're talking about big dollas here!), but Tim asked me to be a judge. =) I'm honored to serve... and can't wait to hear your stories.

Go [here
] to read ALL of the details and guidelines for this giveaway and to purchase the ebook.

The Mindset List for the Class of 2015

I ran across this video recently online. It's part of an interview with Tom McBride (Beloit College) where he discusses this year's mindset list created for the Class of 2015. He created the (witty) list back in 1998 to help faculty at the college "watch their references" with incoming freshman. The list includes 75 references of the Class of 2015. I'll include 15 of them here and you can go [here] for the rest. Lists like this could prove very helpful to youth workers or church leaders (in general) in knowing the audience they are speaking to.

  1. There has always been an Internet ramp onto the information highway.
  2. Ferris Bueller and Sloane Peterson could be their parents.
  3. States and Velcro parents have always been requiring that they wear their bike helmets.
  4. The only significant labor disputes in their lifetimes have been in major league sports.
  5. There have nearly always been at least two women on the Supreme Court, and women have always commanded U.S. Navy ships.
  6. They “swipe” cards, not merchandise.
  7. As they’ve grown up on websites and cell phones, adult experts have constantly fretted about their alleged deficits of empathy and concentration.
  8. Their school’s “blackboards” have always been getting smarter.
  9. “Don’t touch that dial!”….what dial?
  10. American tax forms have always been available in Spanish.
  11. More Americans have always traveled to Latin America than to Europe.
  12. Amazon has never been just a river in South America.
  13. Refer to LBJ, and they might assume you're talking about LeBron James.
  14. All their lives, Whitney Houston has always been declaring “I Will Always Love You.”
  15. O.J. Simpson has always been looking for the killers of Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman.

I also found the website for the mindset lists, which gets over a million hits per year. It was interesting to read up on the class I graduated with (2002).

Amazing Light Show

I think I just witnessed the most amazing light show ever via video. This dude in Riverside, CA out did himself this year with his Halloween tribute. Features 4 singing pumpkin faces, tombstones, hand carved pumpkins, strobes, floods, and thousands of lights -- controlled by 1144 channels.

2 Must-See Videos

I watch a lot of videos in my role as editor for ChurchLeaders.com. I viewed 2 videos recently that really moved me. I'd like to suggest you carve out about 10 hot minutes and watch these.

My friend,
Greg Stier, speaks about the brevity of our time with students. Very moving.

This video about our Father's love made me cry. Very beautiful picture of love.

John Piper Interviews Rick Warren [Video]

Just watched this fascinating interview between John Piper and Rick Warren about the doctrinal depth of The Purpose Driven Life.

Catch the full interview [
here]

Rick Warren is brilliant. I'll never forget hearing him say that he took an extra 7 months to take the manuscript of The Purpose Driven Life to make it more simple, more clear. What a great communicator. He mentioned in the video that he once did a 12-week series on "Sanctification" without ever using the word. Darn you Saddleback... for only allowing your church members to view sermons online. Darn you.

My Daily Affirmation [Video]

I ran across this hilarious video on my friend, Doug Field's, blog. I've often wondered what else I could do in the mornings to get my self ready for the day. I think if I tried this routine that Jessica uses it might help. What do you think?

HELP!

This video was being discussed on CBS this morning. It's sad ... but true.

Words hurt. Bullying has to stop. Period!

LIVES ARE AT STAKE.

And, you may not realize it but you might participate in bullying just by making a comment on someone's facebook status or by laughing when someone is teased at school or at work.

THINK.

Words are worse than sticks and stones.

Ode to @ChickFila

I've seen videos about ChickFila but this one may be my new favorite. Cody Aldrich and John Mitchell and crew shot this video in Eastside Market in Tulsa, OK and its making its rounds on the web. I can certainly relate to their anguish about ChickFila being closed on Sunday, anyone? I've never wanted those breaded nuggets so much in my life as I do on Sundays...

Stay Classy [ #SYMC Music Video]

Each year Jake Rutenbar creates a music video for the conference. This year he raised the bar. Check out this year's installment titled "Stay Classy." This is one of the slickest videos I think I've ever seen at a conference and its definitely worth 4.5 minutes of your time.

My Top 5 Favorite Christmas Videos

Here are my 5 Top Favorite Christmas Videos (in random order) that have gone viral this holiday season.

I first viewed this video on Josh Griffin's blog. It's a little rap music video they made for their services at Saddleback. It's all about Santa needing an intervention.

I saw this video when I visited Seacoast Church this Christmas. Thought it was well done by the guys at Igniter Media.
This was the first of several social media videos I saw this season. Loved this one so much I made sure we included it in our programming for our weekend services.
Mr. Bean cracks me up... and this one is a classic. I can watch it numerous times a day and I'll never get tired of it.
I have to watch the Linus' monologue every year (its a tradition!) even if I don't catch A Charlie Brown Christmas when it airs on television.

Watch them all online [here]. Feel free to share a link to your favorite video in the comments. Merry Christmas!
