iPad Fun

Did you miss the unveiling of the new iPad by Steve Jobs last week? If so, you might have caught some of the fun surrounding the new product from Apple.

...and here's a great quote from SNL's weekend update I thought was pretty funny: "This week Apple released something new that does stuff that its other stuff already does."

Watch the Keynote with Steve Jobs [here]

So what do you think about Apple's newest product? Do you plan to get an iPad?
Me? I'll wait. They'll probably come out with a slim, compact version soon. Ha.

Get Published in 10 Days (or Less)

I have a number of friends who have written books (or plan to write one) and 100% of their content is straight from their blogs. Some of them have found the process quite difficult because of the process their publishing companies run them through.
If you are interested in publishing content from your blog you might try Blurb. This bookmaking software is easy to use and incredibly affordable. You can quickly upload content from your blog into professional templates and in 7-10 business days you'll have the finished product in your hands! You're welcome.

I'm in Love...

... with Carlos Whittaker's new EP.
The music is refreshing. And I'm stoked because he's the special guest artist at a conference that will be held in me backyard.

Manic Monday Minute

Manic Monday Minute is a serious mind-dump that will probably take you one minute to read. Here are some thoughts going through my head right now...

  • This is the Manic Monday Minute...
  • Enjoyed the weekend. Wish we had a four-day.
  • Great services this weekend. We've seen a surge in attendance lately, which has been encouraging. Exciting times are ahead!
  • Rain and strong winds earlier this morn. Thought we had another Nor'easter on our hands.
  • Came home today and my front yard was trashed.
  • My picks to go to the Superbowl were correct - Colts and Saints.
  • I miss Conan already. His last show was memorable. NBC should be ashamed.
  • Conan's speech at the end of his show was stunning.
  • Avatar was excellent. Saw the movie in IMAX over the weekend.
  • Glad I secured my tickets in advance. The show was sold-out.
  • My intern told me that Johnny Depp died on Sunday morning. I went into shock immediately. After all, I consider JD to be one of the best actors there is.
  • Turns out it was a big hoax on twitter.
  • WinterJam is coming through our city this weekend.
  • Praying for miracles.
  • I tried the new throwback Mountain Dew over the weekend - made with real sugar. Good stuff.
  • If you haven't clicked to become a fan on Facebook yet, you can do so [here]
  • Scored a free copy of Margaret Feinberg's newest release.
  • Want free curriculum for your youth ministry? If so, [click here]
  • Please consider making a donation to Haiti Relief. Details [here]
  • Virginia Beach made the list for having two of the dirtiest hotels in the nation.
  • I think a hotel I stayed at in Alabama should top the list. It was so gross that I didn't sleep a wink.
  • Enjoyed a mexican dinner this evening with a couple of friends. I can eat mexican food once a week.... and I do.
  • Until next time America.

    Charlie Beat Me...

Charlie beat me to the punch. Before I could get anything on my site about Haiti this young boy has already raised a fortune! Charlie Simpson, a 7-year-old kid from London, saw the graphic images from Haiti on his television and told his mom he had to do something about it. So he did. He told his mom he could ride his bike & raise money. She soon launched a giving page online for him and he wrote this little message to donors:
"My name is Charlie Simpson. I want to do a sponsored bike ride for Haiti because there was a big earthquake and loads of people have lost their lives. I want to make money to buy food, water and tents for everyone in Haiti. I'm going to cycle around South Park as many times as possible (at least 10 laps I hope!) Please can you sponsor me and all your money will go to UNICEF who are collecting for Haiti."

Just last night I was speaking to a group of students. Part of my message was that they have been fed a lie that they are too young to make a difference. This story is proof that they are not.
Charlie's site has raised over $160,000 so far! You can add to that by giving on Charlie's site [here] or feel free to give through World Vision or the Red Cross, two great organizations doing incredible work on the ground right now in Haiti.

    Site Shout: Ministry Click

Spent some time on the phone recently with Eric McFarland, founder of MinistryClick.com. MinistryClick is a newly developed Christian job posting site. There is something that sets this site apart from the rest - clean drinking water.
    • Each time you visit MinistryClick.com they will donate one DAY of clean drinking water to someone in Africa.
    • When someone uploads their resume for FREE on the site, they will donate one MONTH of clean drinking water for someone in Africa.
    • Each time a church registers on MinistryClick.com they will donate one YEAR of clean drinking water.
    • When a church lists a ministry job on the site, the organization will donate TEN YEARS of clean drinking water for someone in Africa.
Ministry Jobs + MinistryClick = Water for Africa. It's just that simple.

    Manic Monday Minute

Manic Monday Minute is a serious mind-dump that will probably take you one minute to read. Here are some thoughts going through my head right now...

  • This is the Manic Monday Minute...
  • Great weekend. Enjoyed catching up with some old friends and relaxin a little.
  • Rained yesterday. I hate when it rains on Sunday.
  • Our staff works so hard.
  • ... and I'm ready for the time change again. Anyone?
  • I missed the Golden Globes last night.
  • I threw a little after-party at my house following our student service last night. Good times.
  • Gave a listen to Carlos Whittaker's new EP over the weekend. Refreshing music.
  • I've gotten a few really encouraging phone calls and emails lately. Thank you. They all came at just the right time.
  • I'm considering writing NBC about their treatment of Conan. Oh yes, I'm Team Conan.
  • I want to see Avatar. Although yesterday someone told me that it had the same storyline as Pocahontas, except with blue, alien-like creatures.
  • Taco Bell commercial. Eww. I'm not sure I can eat there anymore. The food just smells bad to me.
  • Excited to hear about this new podcast launch.
  • Praying for miracles. Oh yes, I am...
  • If you haven't clicked to become a fan on Facebook yet, you can do so [here]
  • Superbowl Sunday is coming. If I had to pick a team... Colts.

  • [Ouch] - Poor Clayton King.
  • If you haven't subscribed to the RSS of this blog, I'd encourage you to do so. I've got some great post lined up... and you don't want to miss the action. Share the link with a friend too. =)
  • Just got off the phone with my good friend, Tim Schmoyer. I appreciate that guy so much. He's writing a book... due out next year. His blog is without question one of the best Youth Ministry blogs in existence today.
  • The footage on Haiti is staggering. Kudos to CNN for their coverage. Not sure what happened to the other networks...
  • I literally turned the TV on this evening and watched Anderson Cooper carry a bloodied child to safety.
  • Please consider making a donation to Haiti Relief. Details [here]
  • More on Haiti relief tomorrow. Right here.

    Where Movements Begin...

Movements begin with prayer. I don't know why we don't seem to get it. Maybe its just me but it seems like we get more and more away from the very foundation of everything we do -- prayer.

Years ago I was the director a youth recreational facility in South Carolina. We saw hundreds of students come through our door. As much as I'd love to talk about my leadership at the facility or the great staff I worked with in this post, I wanted to share my greatest failure with you... prayer. Even though I had a deep concern for students, I did not invest enough time in prayer for them.

One day a new staff member of mine came up to me and asked if he could have the names of every student that came to our center. I immediately questioned him on why he needed the information and he proceeded to say "I want to pray for each teen, by name." Wow. I was completely humbled by his request. Within a matter of days I literally witnessed the environment of our ministry change right before my very eyes. Students began making decisions for Christ and taking steps of faith like I had never seen before. I quickly realized the difference-maker had nothing to do with me but had everything to do with that staff member's investment in prayer for students.

I experienced a movement of God in that ministry. A movement that began with prayer. To this day I still find myself struggling to invest time in prayer for the students in my ministry, but God gives me gentle reminders from time to time of the importance of prayer - like yesterday when I ran across this picture of Billy Graham praying with one of his friends before one of his famous crusades.

    Manic Monday Minute

Manic Monday Minute is a serious mind-dump that will probably take you one minute to read. Here are some thoughts going through my head right now...

  • This is the Manic Monday Minute...
  • Yesterday was an amazing day of worship.
  • Best attendance we've had in months, great message & testimony, great family event over lunch and an incredible concert last night for students!
  • My friend Sarah is doing 21 days of giveaways. I love a good contest. Especially when I get in on the contest myself -- and win!
  • I have to give a shoutout to one of my newest stalkers... Chelsea. She stopped me yesterday and told me that she follows the blog. Then she told me how many hours it had been since I blogged. That's dedication.
  • I'm excited about Whiteboard coming to a city near me soon... =)
  • Still haven't taken down the Christmas decorations. I may be going for a record here...
  • People keep doing weird things on my facebook page. Someone "sent me a cat" earlier today and then I got hit with a "comfy pillow." Makes no sense to me.
  • Doing some major restructuring in our ministry. Say prayers for great wisdom for our staff and elders!
  • My world was rocked this past week with one simple question. I may share later... but for now its something I have to wrestle with.
  • American Idol. Tomorrow night. Can't wait.
  • I cannot believe NBC would consider asking Conan to move back into his old time slot because Leno's ratings aren't great. Isn't that like giving someone a gift and asking for it back?
  • By the way, I prefer Conan over Leno. And Conan over Fallon too.
  • Went to see Leap Year with a friend on Friday evening. It was pretty funny. This makes the second "chick flick" in a row I've liked.
  • Something BIG is about to happen. Just you watch.
  • Looks like I'll be traveling on Superbowl Sunday.
  • I'm still not thrilled over the choice of half-time entertainment. Who in the world makes this decision?
  • I saw one of Starbuck's personalized cards today. Very cool.
  • My drink choice changes too much to put it on a card. Ha.
  • Congrats to Tic Long, new Executive Director at YS. You can read his take on the journey [here]
  • No Spider-Man 4 huh?
  • I cannot get enough of the song "God of this City." What an amazing song.
  • I believe every word.
  • Greater Things Are Yet to Come.

I've been following the blog of TK McKamy for a while. He was recently in Nashville and stumbled upon a street performer doing some freestyle and drawing a crowd - not to mention the tips. TK, being the stand-up guy that he is, decided to use collaborate with the rapper and help produce a video to promote their music. This is a great example of using your life to enrich someone else's.

    Manic Monday Minute

Manic Monday Minute is a serious mind-dump that will probably take you one minute to read. Here are some thoughts going through my head right now...

  • This is the Manic Monday Minute...
  • Burrrrrrr! I think today may have been the coldest day yet.
  • Snow in the forecast too...
  • Had a White Chocolate Mocha from Starbys today. It's one of their most popular drinks ya know.
  • Inspiring stuff from my friends at Saddleback.
  • Cheap Tickets isn't so... cheap.
  • Threw a party at my house over the weekend.
  • One of the attendees (who had never been to my house) apparently knows the lineage of tenants of my home. First thing she said when she walked in... "oh, I recognize this house now. a stripper use to live here." Wha?
  • I learned something over the weekend. Never get near someone while they are playing the Wii. I got hit incredibly hard by someone putting their all into their golf swing.
  • Something funny happened while setting up for the party too. I found a rat in my house. A toy rat.
  • My sister undoubtedly left her kitty's toy behind from her visit in November and it caught me by surprise.
  • I'm dreading something...like a kid dreads school starting after Christmas break is over.
  • Today is mom's first day back to work. Thinking of her.
  • Heard a great quote today: "There are two reasons for failure: thinking and not doing or doing and not thinking."
  • Someone told me today that 2010 will be good to me. I believe... receive it... and can't wait to celebrate it.
  • The day has been filled with a lot of God moments. It has seriously been a good day.
  • Ran into an old friend today. I love unexpected meetings like that.
  • Spending the day at the hospital while one of our students has open heart surgery.
  • I was moved to tears after hearing the surgeon talk about some of the things our body naturally does on its own.
  • To think that someone could deny our creator God after seeing how the human body works blows. my. mind!
  • Well, I'm signing off friends.

    This is Digital Abuse.

I was watching MTV the other day and saw the following in-your-face public service message.

MTV recently announced their multi-year campaign initiative to stop digital abuse among today's students. This comes after the results of a recent study released by MTV and AP exploring the full scope of digital abuse - from sexting to cyber bullying. The network began airing the public service messages in December and launched a website for the intiative - A Thin Line.

Here are a few highlights I compiled from the study:
  • 50% of young people surveyed have been victim of digital abuse.
  • 3 out of 10 teens reported they have been involved in some type of naked sexting.
  • 45% of those surveyed who have had sex in the past 7 days admitted to prior sexting activity.
  • 1 in 5 sext recipients reported they have passed images on to other people.
  • 76% of teens say that digital abuse is a real problem and must be addressed.
  • 54% said they would most likely do nothing if they see someone being bullied on a social networking site.
  • 56% indicated they were extremely affected after being targeted by someone.
  • 13% are twice as likely to seek the help of a mental health professional.
  • 58% of teens would report bullying to parent - and names parent as top resource.
  • 63% of teens from single-parent homes are targeted, compared with 45% of those living in two-parent homes.
  • For the full report click [here].

I think this is a very positive intiative to a growing problem. What are your thoughts? Did the results of the study surprise you?
