A few months ago I took the recommendation of Tim Schmoyer and began using a company called TxTsignal.com, which provides a service for mass-texting.
Email is so last year for students and instant messaging or text IS the way to communicate. Sending mass text messages is easy when you have a service like TxtSignal. Texting would win over email or snail mail anyday because students always have their cell phones with them and they can retrieve their text messages instantly. If you have a last minute announcement or if their is a cancellation of any sort you can send them a quick message via text. We've been using TxTSignal in our ministry for a few months now and I love it. The only drawback is that students cannot reply to your messages... but in time the folks at TxTSignal will remedy that.
I am aware of a couple other providers but they are not near as user-friendly as these. Try these out for yourself and see how they work for your ministry!
Does your ministry use a text messaging service already? Comments welcome.

Bro, we are using email to do that right now. Students can reply and it doesn't have an extra monthly fee. I am loving it!!! Obviously you can put it in groups, etc.
Just thot I'd pass it on.
Elevate is a Hawaii based church that also successfully uses mass texting, with a service provided by Club Texting. You can read about their efforts @ Elevate's Story
