Manic Monday Minute

Manic Monday Minute is a serious mind-dump that will probably take you one minute to read. Here are some thoughts going through my head right now...

  • Its the Manic Monday Minute - travel edition.
  • Finished up with my missions project last week and boy was I tired!
  • Coordinating a missions project for nearly 400 participants is tough work. Thankfully I had a great staff to work with to pull it off.
  • I was running on fumes as I literally got an average of 3 hours of sleep per night.
  • Made some great connections with pastors and youth pastors around the country last week. I'm very excited about these new friendships.
  • I'm on the road this week...
  • Currently visiting the great state of South Carolina
  • Leading a group of students at camp experience in the upstate.
  • I think we made a total of 91 stops today. Took forever.
  • These kiddos are funny!
  • I was playing some old school "Grits" for them today. One of the little kids said "I need my chain!" It was hilarious!
  • Some of the girls brought Taylor Swift along with us. They sang her songs periodically.
  • Still have a Starbucks gift card leftover from last week. I'm stoked about hitting a Starbys up while here.
  • Will probably hit the Beacon while here in South Carolina.
  • Thanks to the staff back at my church holding the fort down during my summer ministry. I couldn't do what I do without you.
  • Everything is always in good hands when you guys are at the helm.
  • Congratulations to one of my best friends, Dave Daniels (aka "Churchy Dave"), on his new position at Reality Church as Creative Arts Pastor.
  • Had the band Stand Still appear to close out our missions project on Friday evening. They did an incredible job.
  • Tomorrow is a busy day...
  • Oh shoot, its raining and I'm in flip flops. Not a good scenario.
  • Crawford outta here!

  • The Church on the Move

Heres a little vid of a church literally on the move... over 100 years old moving to another site.

The event was very much like a parade... but I couldn't find the float equipped with the choir who provided the music for the procession.

    10 Commandments of Web Design

BusinessWeek.com canvassed a broad range of internet luminaries recently to inquire about the design rules they live by. Contributors ranged from the guru of Web usability, Don Norman, co-founder of the Nielsen Norman Group, to the design director of NYTimes.com, Khoi Vinh, and John Maeda, president-elect of the Rhode Island School of Design. These 10 commandments of Web design for 2008 are the combined results of their survey:

    1. Thou shalt not abuse Flash.
    2. Thou shalt not hide content.
    3. Thou shalt not clutter.
    4. Thou shalt not overuse glassy reflections.
    5. Thou shalt not name your Web 2.0 company with an unnecessary surplus or dearth of vowels.
    6. Thou shalt worship at the altar of typography.
    7. Thou shalt create immersive experiences.
    8. Thou shalt be social.
    9. Thou shalt embrace proven technologies.
    10. Thou shalt make content king.

    Sleepless in Norfolk...

As I currently write this I'm smack dab in the middle of a missions project I'm coordinating, with approximately 400 participants in the Norfolk, VA area. It's very late (1.54am, EST) and I'm waiting on two different participants to return from the hospital (yes, they are going to be okay -- mainly just checking them as a precaution).

I've gotten approximately 3-5 hours sleep per night on this project. It seems to compare with others as there is so much coordination. My staff just went to bed 30 minutes ago. They have worked tirelessly. Fortunately I got a 2.5 hour nap this afternoon to help me with my late-night watch.

Last night was pretty funny as the speaker I invited to share in our services this week came to the room last night (as we are sharing sleeping quarters together) after I had just laid down. There is a huge whiteboard in our room and I noticed that he entered the room, picked up a marker and began to write on the board. I didn't query what he was thinking but instead was excited about knowing that just a few hours later I'd get up to start my day and see some really profound thoughts that he had written before me.

This morning I woke up and found the following on the board:

Five Indications Your Church is Redneck:
  • There is a two drink limit at communion.
  • The church van has gun racks.
  • Communion has a cover charge.
  • Organist only knows "Stairway to Heaven."
  • It's Bro. Jeff Gordon to you!

Not quite what I was expecting but funny.
Its been a good week... and I'm expecting the next two (last) days of the project to be good ones.

  • Manic Monday Minute

Manic Monday Minute is a serious mind-dump that will probably take you one minute to read. Here are some thoughts going through my head right now...

  • Its the Manic Monday Minute.
  • My cah-razy summer has begun...
  • I just started a missions project on Saturday that I'm coordinating for Norfolk, VA.
  • Temperature hasn't felt too bad in the last few days. I pray we continue to have a break in the heat this week...
  • I need to make a Walmart trip and I'm trying to talk myself out of it.
  • My friend Shawna says that Walmart and I need couples counseling. (Ha!)
  • My good friend, Walt Barnes is in town speaking for my mission project. I'm glad he is here! You need to book this guy to speak -- very solid.
  • He had me prank call his wife last night. She figured out it was me. Glad she was a good sport... it was after midnight!
  • We had an amazing concert of prayer tonight. VERY moving.
  • Haven't been on Twitter in last three days. Looks like my tweet peeps haven't abandoned me.
  • I agree with what I've read lately on the blogs... Bloggers seem to be slowing down.
  • Had some great fruit today. Love me some pineapple!
  • Looking forward to the weekend here.
  • God has been really showing me the power of encouragement lately. Why don't we encourage others more?
  • Long day today. Long day tomorrow.
  • Crawford out!

  • The Heart of the Matter...

My mentor and very good friend, David Olshine, asked a very good question in a recent article he published for YouthWorker Journal. How is your heart doing? "Olshine" (as I often call him) had a scare about his physical heart which led him to reflect on the condition of his spiritual heart.

"During one of my son’s Christmas parties, my chest started to hurt. It lasted all day. Then while watching a college football game on TV that evening, my chest started to tighten. And it wasn’t because my team was losing.

My wife is smart enough to know that you don’t mess with heart stuff, so she sent me to one of those urgent-care hospitals. I waited and waited. As I sat, the area surrounding my heart was feeling heavier and heavier, and I kept thinking, “I could die here, and I’d still have to wait my turn!”

Finally the nurse called me name, and after an hour and a half of blood work and EKG tests, I was sent home with good news. I do have a heart, and it’s in good shape. Turned out lifting weights during the last few days had torn a muscle.

Most of us are unaware of our physical heart. It often takes an emergency to get our attention...

The Proof is in the Popcorn

Our staff has taken on a pretty intense painting project over the last two months as we are redesigning our small group environments. This project didn't just call for paint. It also called for props, lighting and new media. Some time ago I approached my staff and suggested that we begin praying (not purchasing) over the items that we needed. One of those items was a commercial-grade popcorn popper.

We've seen God honor our faith and prayers as we started this project with literally no budget. Last week I was approached by a lady (randomly) who asked me "Could you guys use a commercial-grade popcorn popper at your church?" Uh...

God has blessed us beyond belief. We've seen the work of his hands even two years ago when we started another project, a recreational area for our students. Even though its a smaller space, it too needed just the right paint, equipment and good taste to make it right. Literally month-by-month we saw things come our way that we prayed for (not purchased)... a brand new pool table, Nintendo Wii, plasma TV, refrigerator, air-hockey table... and the list goes on.

I don't share this to boast about what we have nor am I suggesting that you have a lack of faith or belief in God if things you pray for don't come your way. My intent is to share the incredible way God has provided for our community here and I adequately want to celebrate what He has done.

God knows I've doubted Him numerous times in my journey but I'm learning to chronicle the work of his hands (the proof!) that He is very real -- active, present, working.

  • Manic Monday Minute

Manic Monday Minute is a serious mind-dump that will probably take you one minute to read. Here are some thoughts going through my head right now...

  • Its the Manic Monday Minute.
  • Last week of somewhat normal schedule. My schedule is about to get chaotic.
  • Kent Shaffer had a great article you should read on standby power stealing from your church.
  • Had a very relaxing Father's Day with a few friends.
  • Visited ForeFront last week for a service. Love Vince Antonucci and the guys there. If I weren't on staff at a church I'd probably want to join their church. Where would you go if you weren't at your church?
  • Weather was beautiful earlier tonight (temp great!)
  • Can't wait to get a copy of the Whiteboard DVD. I'm ready to listen to the messages again (from Whiteboard) to see what I missed. Have you ordered one?
  • Been VERY smoky here lately. We're getting smoke from the wild fires in NC and now our own Chesapeake, VA.
  • I sang the National Anthem at a baseball game tonight.
  • We won the game (10-0)... which was quite a feat considering the team hasn't one hardly any of their games this year.
  • When I arrived home my street was flooded... from all the rain!
  • On Saturday evening I attended the LifeChurch.tv internet campus.
  • Perry Noble was the guest speaker for the One Prayer series.
  • Perry threw it down... as usual -- a great message.
  • Welcome to my newest tweets. Thanks for following me.
  • Begin a massive World Changers project this Thursday. I'm coordinating the project for Norfolk, VA.
  • Had quite the unproductive afternoon today.
  • Someone moved our painting supplies (which I plan to use tomorrow) and didn't tell me where the new location was.
  • I spent all afternoon making calls to staff and looking high and low for them. Quite frustrating... but finally found them!
  • Got a call earlier today from a Christian company who wanted to 'pray for me' and my minstry. (insert small rant here...) Sorry, but it seemed to much like a marketing ploy. I may have come off rude.
  • Anyone else get these and feel this way?
  • My good friend, Josh, has a cool movie tourney going on. Very creative.
  • Saw Kung Fu Panda last week. It was awesome -- very funny!
  • Wow... its raining REALLY hard now.
  • Soon heading to bed.
  • Peace out.

    Unleash the MAC Posse

The guy on the right would be proud. I'm buying my first MAC and should have it in hand by the end of the month. For months I've been ridiculed by the "MAC Posse" (you know who you are) who I still believe is secretly paid by Apple to promote their products. I even attended a MAC party on late Tuesday evening (which I think was part of the geek-initiation, no?). So I finally gave in. I know, it'll be heaven on earth. I know, I will never want a PC ever again. I get it. Ok... unleash the MAC praise in the comments.

    Tippers vs. Gyppers

Some of the TMZ spies at a few Hollywood Restaurants reported a few of the tippers and gyppers in one of their recent news releases. They reported the worst tipper to be David Beckham, while the best tipper to be Ryan Seacrest -- once leaving a reported $500 tip for a $100 tab.

I bring the issue of tipping and gypping up because "Christians" are notorious for gypping...which = sad.

I received a call recently from a good friend who has been burned by the church and really wants nothing to do with it. She (a current waitress) called me one evening as I so happened to be leaving a very fine restaurant. When I told her my location she immediately asked me how much of a tip I left. Even though this was a personal question I felt her inquiry further underscored my belief that a good tip is a good witness.

Last week I returned to that very fine restaurant (which I tend to frequent) and I actually received poor service. Even though the service was poor (on that night) I knew that the relationship I'm building with the waitstaff and my witness in general were far too important not to leave a good tip.

So why did I mention the celebs you ask? Well, just as they are well-known members of society so are some of us as leaders -- and sometimes, well, Christians can be spotted a mile away. So be careful... as you might have a TMZ spy (or someone who has been burned by the church) around taking copious mental notes of your actions.

So... are you a tipper or a gypper?

    God on Film.

If you talk to any church planter and ask them what teaching series their congregants love most, 9 out of 10 times they will say the "God on Film" or the "At the Movies" series.

LifeChurch.tv will be doing their "God on Film" type series this summer and I was blown away by their promo.

  • We had an incredible graduation recognition service yesterday.
  • Went to one graduation ceremony on Friday and attended another one today.
  • Man... its so ... cold outside.
  • Finished our Pop Goes the Church discussion group. I'm kinda sad.
  • Checking out Gyminee.com after seeing a twitter post by Transition Pete.
  • Did you catch my ultimate blog shout?

  • Coordinating a huge missions project in our city this summer. I was in meetings all day planning this.
  • Just had some Chinese food.
  • The One Prayer series kicked off this Sunday. Everyone is talking about it.
  • I think its awesome to consider the uniting of over 1,400 churches for one teaching series. I hope this is the start of something bigger in the church today.
  • I didn't get a weekend. Had several events this weekend which led to TC not resting much. Needless to say, I'm pooped.
  • Graduation parties, training workshop I led on Saturday, etc... lots going on.
  • Arrgh. More spam.
  • Are you following me on Twitter? If not, check it here.
  • Last week I gave shoutouts to people reading me in places like Canada, Japan, Uganda, Egypt, the Netherlands, Ecuador, the United Kingdom, Turkey and beyond... hoping that these readers would leave me a nice comment and say "It's ME!" "It's ME!"
  • Wow... just checked this space out created by my friend Clayton Bell.
  • I knew tidbits to his story but didn't know the whole story.
  • Clayton, I have a lot of respect for you my man. Thanks for sharing your life with us.
  • I can't wait till the Catalyst conference this fall.
  • Obama. Finally we have the Democratic nominee. Sheesh.
  • Going with some other student ministers to see a movie on Thursday. What should we see?
  • I was in a mood this morning. Had to apologize to several people in advance in case I offended them during the day. By 12noon I seemed to be good to go. Apparently I wasn't awake yet?
  • Yea, I'm not a morning person.
  • Weather outside is zapping my energy. Its like kryptonite.

    Before you email...

Seth Godin shared a very tight mental checklist you should consult before sending your next email. Here’s an abbreviated list of the 36 he wrote:

    1. Is it going to just one person? (If yes, jump to #10)
    2. Since it’s going to a group, have I thought about who is on my list?
    3. Are they blind copied?
    4. Did every person on the list really and truly opt in? Not like sort of, but really ask for it?
    5. So that means that if I didn’t send it to them, they’d complain about not getting it?
    6. See #5. If they wouldn’t complain, take them off!
    7. That means, for example, that sending bulk email to a list of bloggers just cause they have blogs is not okay.
    8. Aside: the definition of permission marketing: Anticipated, personal and relevant messages delivered to people who actually want to get them. Nowhere does it say anything about you and your needs as a sender. Probably none of my business, but I’m just letting you know how I feel. (And how your prospects feel).
    9. Is the email from a real person? If it is, will hitting reply get a note back to that person? (if not, change it please).
    10. Have I corresponded with this person before?

(Editor's note: I don't agree with a couple of these but overall its a good list. Also, if you are sending mass forwards beware because you may receive a reply back with only this link in the text. )

    Mr. Networker

I am a bit of a networker. Actually, you could probably call me "Mr. Networker." Networking is something that I've learned to do naturally. People have commented on it. Some even claim its my spiritual gift.

When I'm in a room filled with people I like to mingle. I typically want to know everybody... and sometimes everybody knows me. I don't know claim to know everyone. I tease Jay Hardwick (church planter) since we've become friends about how he is the guy who knows everybody. I've also come to know Brad Lomenick (from Catalyst) through Whiteboard. I'm told he is a Master Networker. After speaking with him, I could affirm that.

Yesterday I was in a board meeting. I serve on the board of directors for an incredible recovery ministry in our area that is growing at an incredible rate of speed. I looked around the room and I was literally humbled as I realized that I was sitting next to some of the most powerful people in our area. Nearly 90% of them worth millions and mega-millions of dollars. They own corporations, buy and sell businesses and homes daily, have stocks that are valued at more than my life (just kidding), etc. I thought to myself "how the heck am I sitting here with these individuals?" I then realized that this happens often for me. I somehow get connected with innovative minds, the movers & shakers and become friends with them. I don't get linked up with them for selfish gain. It just seems to happen naturally. I could see myself in a dream job one day where this will be part of my role - making connections (networking).

Additionally, I think this is one reason why blogging has become such a favorite of mine. It has literally fueled my fire for networking and making connections around the world. Some people will blog and keep their websites for a season. I'm here for the long-haul.

Speaking of networking, yesterday Kent Shaffer introduced a new community online where people are getting connected... and networking. It's called "ROOV." I just checked it out and signed up right away. You can look for me there.

    Churchy Web Trends

The Barna group just released new research of some churchy web trends that I find very interesting. Of the computer users among your congregants Barna found that as many as 10% may be blogging.

Here are some other finds from the report:
  • 78% used email this week.
  • 33% have used instant messaging in the past week.
  • 30% sent someone a txt message from their cell phone.
  • 26% watched a vid on the internet.
  • 23% use sites like MySpace or Facebook.
  • 13% downloaded music online.
  • 14% leave comments on blogs.
  • 10% have a blog.
  • 2% downloaded a movie.

I wonder how many congregants just read blogs -- without taking time to create one or leave a comment.

Click here to view the full update from Barna.

    Does the research surprise you?

    The Uncontacted

There are over one hundred different tribes around the globe today who choose to reject contact with the outside world. Fascinating pictures surfaced on the internet yesterday of an uncontacted tribe on the border Peru and Brazil. They are being called "the most vulnerable peoples on the planet."

It is hard for those of us in America to relate to a culture like this. This people group is one of many who live on the run and are fleeing their land as colonists, oil crews and cattle ranchers invade their territory. In the pics below you can actually see some of the tribal members with their weapons drawn to attack as the plane flies overhead. This afternoon I watched this video narrated by Julie Christie for Survival International, one mission organization whose vision is to reach uncontacted tribes. I pray for missionaries and organizations like this who reach these people groups but find it so hard sometimes to understand other cultures as we are so far removed from areas of the world like this.
