One of my greatest fears has always been that I'll miss a miracle of God. That is probably why this post really jacked me up a few months ago. My friend Ben wrote on "Miracles that Fall Below Expectation." He shared how many of us miss the miracle like good ole' Naaman when he was told by Elisha that he needed to take about seven dips in the Jordan before he'd be cured of leprosy.
"Go, wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed." But Naaman went away angry and said, "I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy." 2 Kings 5Did you check his response? Anger towards the Lord.
I spent 2009 praying for more miracles than ever. Miracles for my family, church, friends and, of course, myself. Here's a run-down...
My family: My stepfather was laid off by GM, my sister experienced a personal relationship crisis and my mother was diagnosed with cancer. Fortunately, my stepfather is able to care for my mother during her time of need, my sister has experienced incredible spiritual renewal and my mother has learned she is quite the trooper!
My church: I was hired by the ministry last January and we've experienced incredible feats this year but due to the economic downturn we're having to consider major cutbacks and may face a possible layoff in the new year.
My friends: I have several friends who experienced marital failure, others who lost their jobs, and a few who left the ministry. Faith has proven strong in a few of these cases, while others seem to be experiencing a constant struggle.
Yours truly: My car was sidelined this summer and I've felt the economic crunch too. Thankfully, I have some dear friends who loaned me a car and I've been able to make a little extra cash on the side.
Through all of these situations I think I've walked away learning to depend & trust in my creator more. That is a miracle in itself. I just hope through every situation... every miracle I pray for... that I don't miss the opportunity to see God at work or the chance to celebrate what He has done. Because, as Ben says, "it's still a miracle even if you are up to your neck in water."

Manic Monday Minute is a serious mind-dump that will probably take you one minute to read. Here are some thoughts going through my head right now...
This is the Manic Monday Minute... Weekend was filled with SNOW. Had a great time at Christmastown at Busch Gardens on Friday evening. It snowed the entire time we were there. I was so impressed with the park though! We had our Student Ministry Christmas party on Saturday evening. Snowed the entire time. We had a great weekend service and a surprising crowd turnout considering the weather. My vacation starts tomorrow. I cannot wait! I submitted this to the FAIL blog today. Today was very stinky all around. Got some very discouraging news this morning and the rest of the day was a drag from there. Watched the Survivor Finale last night even though I missed some of the season's episodes. If I had a chance to win a million I think I'd rather go on Who Wants to Be a Millionnaire or Deal or No Deal. I'm craving some sweet tea right now and there's none in the fridge. sheesh. Got a couple of cards in the mail from people in former ministries I was a part of. It is awesome to have made so many friends over the years. I think I ticked off a few people with this comment. My sister's kitty has been very sick lately. I've never prayed for pets much (just being honest...), but I've prayed for that kitty! She loves that cat. Can't wait to see that cat this Christmas. He'll probably scratch me again. [ha] Thanks for your prayers for my mother. She begins her cancer treatments just after Christmas. *ugh* I hate cancer. Owl City is coming in concert to our area and the show sold out in no-time. I had hoped to score a ticket. If 2010 sucks I'm going to punch it in the jugular. Really Ben... we're going to need you to tweet in English to follow you. Church planters really get making a difference in their community like nobody else. My friend Shaun King really inspired me with his latest work. Thanks for stopping by friends.

Manic Monday Minute is a serious mind-dump that will probably take you one minute to read. Here are some thoughts going through my head right now...
This is the Manic Monday Minute... Weekend was a blur. Today was too. It was a bit foggy. Had a pretty productive weekend. Unfortunately not a lot of down time. Great weekend services and Christmas dinner. Lots of singing... and laughter - two of my favorite things. What is the point of having links on your site if they are all broken? Some blogs I visit share lots of link love (or intend to) but their links need updating badly. Someone intentionally blessed me today. I was refreshed. Ok... I just finished a series on Habits. Here I sit revealing one of my bad ones to you: chewing ice. I can't help but do it... and its so bad. Ugh! Hope the weather is good this weekend. I'm making plans. I hate when my phone rings and I automatically think to myself "Oh no... what do they want?" I hope people never think that when I call... Looking forward to some much-needed time off next week. Yee-haw. You have to love teens. Just discovered a new site: Listorious. And the good news... I'm listed there. "Lie to Me" one of my fave new shows aired again tonight. I thought it was done until the new year. Glad I was mistaken! I'm going to have to start training again. Would you [share] a special year-end donation and help resource other leaders by doing so? This summer I experienced something I never had before. I was speaking at a conference and in between sessions someone pulled me aside and asked if it was common for me to have "hecklers" show up at my events. Wha? I was floored by the question. The gentleman continued by telling me how a few people in a car literally drove by the venue shouting my name and was using profanity. Are you kidding me? These "hecklers" happened to drive by while the conference was on lunch break so the front lawn covered by a number of people. I begin to ask further questions - Are you sure you didn't just 'think' you heard my name? What did the car look like? Why ME? etc. Within minutes security was notified and the police literally began to patrol the neighborhood around the venue. Woah.
[PS] I may start accepting applications for a "personal assistant."
I realize that there are a few of you who may read this and you say, "uh... yea, that's why I have a personal assistant (bodyguard)," while others of you are like me going "what the heck?!? that's never happened to me before!" I began to learn the lesson real quick that everyone is not a fan of me. There are speakers, pastors, bloggers who have hecklers and critics. It's very real. And this was my first exposure to this world.
Recently I appreciated hearing something Perry Noble (who has a personal assistant travel with him) say about this whole subject. I particularly liked a quote he mentions from Rick Warren. Listen for it... WAIT FOR IT. It's a solid word for dealing with your hecklers and critics.[PS] I may start accepting applications for a "personal assistant."

Me: For those who might not know you, tell us a little bit of your story.DC: Wow where to start. I great up in Houston, TX, went to high school in Sealy, TX. My parents divorced when I was about 9, I have one older brother who is two years older than me. I went to college at Notre Dame on a football and baseball scholarship but only ended up playing football. During that time I was attending Granger Community Church (where i'm currently employed). After Notre Dame I went to the NFL where I was with the Miami Dolphins and the Cincinnati Bengals before leaving the NFL to go pursue Student Ministry. On December 1st of 2006 I came on staff at Granger as the Director of Student Ministry and as of December 1st 2009 I accepted the additional position of also being on the Senior Management Team for our church...still sounds weird to say that.
Me: What book(s) have most shaped you?
DC: I have a hard time reading ALL the way through books but even still here's my short list of books that have "SHAPED" me. Channels of Spiritual Power by Frank Laubach, Divine Conspiracy by Dallas Willard, the Spirit of Disciplines by Dallas Willard, and Next Generation Leader by Andy Stanley.
Me: You are a blogger. What have you learned through blogging? Favorite blogs?
DC: Through blogging, I've learned that everybody has something to say and an agenda to push. For me, that's frustrating and awesome at the same time. Frustrating because I HATE that it usually includes self-promotion (I believe we can be profound without having to try to take credit for EVERYTHING we say...to me that's a sign of insecurity...there I go with my agenda again...) AND i think it's awesome because lots of people have some amazing things to say and are never given the platform to do it. So, I love that blogging levels the playing field for some unlikely people to be able to say unlikely things and make an impact on those of us who are too self-consumed to give them our physical ear or platform. I could care less about ratings, followers, etc. but I LOVE the content on some blogs.

Me: Most embarassing moment from the platform?
DC: Wasn't really embarrassed by this, but it was hilarious!!! I was preaching to a room full of high schoolers here at Granger when I threw my shoulder out of socket AND split my pants from the crack of my crotch in the back ALL THE WAY DOWN to behind my calf WHILE explaining an illustration and still had 22 minutes left in my message to preach!!!! It was great. So instead of calling it quits because I was just getting started, I held my arm in place, set it on the coffee height table I was speaking from and kept on preaching. BUT I began to sweat profusely because my body was reacting to the pain!!! I was literally DRENCHED in sweat by the time that 22 minutes was up. I didn't tell crowd until the end after I had prayed. Then I picked my arm up off the table and let it fall and that was all she wrote. The crowd was grossed out and laughing like crazy, I was a sweaty mess and in CARAZY pain by this point...and on top of that the fact that my pants had ripped in the back meant I had to walk sideways (more like a side shuffle) all the way off the stage! [ha]
Me: Where do you turn for inspiration (besides Christ Jesus of course)?DC: For Life: My wife Brooke and my family (my parents and brother). For Ministry: I usually look to our main weekend services here at Granger to get inspiration as they throw away better ideas than I can ever come up with. From there I just scour the blog world and see what's crackin in other student ministries!
Me: Considering you are a youth pastor, what is the most notable advice you would provide other youth pastors with?
DC: I would definitely say, forget what everyone else is doing and start with "WHY DID I FIRST WANT TO DO YOUTH MINISTRY?" and from there build a ministry that honors God through that passion...THEN surround yourself with people who can help you build the rest of what needs to happen so the ministry thrives. Here's why I believe that is important: People are drawn to passion. If we could all focus on doing what we are most passionate about than doing things we feel obligated to do because the ministry down the street or on the web is doing it, we might actually be more productive.
Me: Catch us up to speed. What exciting things are going on at Granger?
DC: Right now Christmas Season around Granger is in full swing. In Student Ministry we're doing a series called "Christ's Passion for his Bride" talking about how as Christ's Bride we're intended to be the Salt of the Earth and Light of the world. We got some sick object lessons we're doing with those weeks and also some sick videos and song specials planned ("Pure Bride" by Leeland and "I Receive" by Israel Houghton). 'Big Church' (weekend services) are doing a series called Christmas Carol this off the chain. You can check the gccwired.com to check those out. We have our annual "Food Drop" around the corner in early January where we pack, load, and deliver 75 tons of food to the Michiana area (our student ministry jumps in with the rest of the church and serve in this effort). Some of our Christmas offering is going toward breaking ground on our Commons area at our Granger Campus (our student ministry participate in this as well). Not to mention our Christmas Eve services that are sure to be powerful.
Me: Give us three of the best (yet maybe underrated) resources available to youth pastors today...
DC: Best resources for me are our students and parents. Sounds odd and underrated but nobody knows what we need to be doing for our students growth better than our students and their parents so we use them as resources all the time and build the ministry around that. Resources people could buy, I think the usual suspects Simply Youth Ministry, Youth Specialities, and Student Life are good.
Me: What are you currently dreaming about?
DC: I'm currently dreaming about how I can best contribute to our Senior Management Team after accepting that role Tuesday December 1st. As far as my dreams for Student Ministry: I'm dreaming about how to build a hybrid ministry. A ministry that does all forms of Shepherding well. Right now i'm focused on these three areas: 1. Corporate Shepherding (Big Group gathering style) 2. Personal Shepherding (Where everyone feels they are PERSONALLY being shepherded by someone.) 3. Reproductive Shepherding (Still working on what I want to call this one, but this is really about 'giving away the shepherding that you're receiving.)
Me: What is something that most people don't know about you?
DC: I played saxophone most of my life and was a soloist in my high school concert band...and I'm not ashamed of it (hahaha!)

On January 22 a new indie movie "To Save a Life" written by seasoned youth worker, Jim Britts, hits select theatres. This movie is about real life challenges that teens face and the response from students who have seen the film has been incredible. There is a grassroots effort underway in my area to have the film shown in multiple theatres, although its only scheduled for one. I'd encourage you to check out the trailer, log on to the movie site and get some resources to help support this work.

This is the Manic Monday Minute... ... a complete (well, somewhat) mind-dump from my brain straight to this post. I may never crash a White House Party... but I crashed a Youth Pastor Network lunch on Thursday. This whole White House dinner party crashers deal blows my mind. I can't believe how much press its getting. I mean, if the couple were terrorists... I'd understand. By the way, SNL's segment on it this Saturday was HILARIOUS. If u missed it u better Hulu. Went to a local Christmas celebration on Friday. Man, the fireworks display was probably the best I've seen yet. I was really impressed. Found it funny that several people I know were there (although I didn't know they were there). Here's a pic of some of them watching me from the Marriott Hotel. ... and by me, I mean the fireworks. Tried to accomplish some yardwork on Saturday. Weather didn't permit me to. So I did it a few hot minutes ago. Sunday was an incredible day for many churches. If you are on twitter you may have seen report after report of people giving their lives to Christ. Wow. Sunday evening we had our final student service for the year. (sniff) I'm already anticipating our kickoff in 2010 on January 10. Had some wings for lunch today. Yea buddy! Watched an instructional video just the other day on how to eat wings just to make sure I knew the correct way. Who says you don't learn anything on my blog? I'm not hearing as much Christmas music on the radio this year as last year. Very strange. Went Christmas tree shopping today. Didn't buy one. They are so darn expensive aren't they? My mother told me to check "the dime store." "Mother, I replied, those don't exist anymore." "We're now up to Dollar stores." Where is Clark Griswald when you need him? He'd fetch me a tree... If you haven't clicked to become a fan on Facebook yet, you can do so [here] Now THIS is advertising. Great interview with a former NFL football player turned ministry leader on my blog tomorrow. Don't miss it! Getting lots of spam messages on my blog. I may have to turn off the annonymous comment feature. =( Ok already. I'm aware of how good Blindside is. Making arrangements to see it this week. Seems like I clean up one mess and simultaneously create another. ugh! Speaking of... gotta go clean one up!

A friend of a friend (twice removed - JK) sent me an email to tell me that his son (Trent) is starring in a new interactive web series called, "Sweety High." This new series' is targeted for 11-17 year old girls (mostly) & boys. Sweety High is a 'G' rated series similar to 90210.
I'm told this series will be pushing more positive content to teens - which is good news to my ears. What currently sets this series a part is that its interactive. Viewers can visit the website and comment on what they like or dislike and their ideas may translate into changes to the characters or even the storylines.
The cast and crew have shot 9 episodes so far and if the response from the online community is good a network may pick up the show! Check out the trailer, feel free to leave feedback... and see Trent's ("Charlie" - the taller brodude in the series) work.

I have said those words in my head many times. I'm a complete failure. I've written the resignation letter... and was ready to hand it in. Then... ((gut check)) I begin to be reminded in my spirit of the changed lives I've seen. I'm committed for the long haul.Alec Baldwin recently told a reporter:
"I don't have any interest in acting anymore. Movies are part of my past. It's been 30 years. I'm not young, but I have time to do something else.
It's a difficult thing to say, but I believe it: I consider my entire movie career a complete failure. I'll tell you why. The goal of moviemaking is to star in a film where your performance drives the film, and the film is either a soaring critical or commercial success, and I never had that."
